Why More Americans Are Choosing to Own Real Estate

Renting provides flexibility, but ownership can provide something renting typically does not: equity and long-term wealth creation.

According to the Federal Reserve's 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances, the median net worth of a homeowner was approximately $396,200, compared with just $10,400 for renters and other non-homeowners. That's a difference of roughly 38 times.

The reason is simple: when you rent, your monthly payment primarily pays for housing. When you own, part of your payment can build equity in an asset you own.
